The responsibilities would include, but not limited to, the following:
We are seeking an experienced Senior/Lead Relay Technician to join our Utility Services team. This position is responsible for the testing, commissioning, maintenance, troubleshooting, and repair of protective relaying systems and associated substation equipment in utility and renewable energy facilities.The successful candidate will serve as a technical leader in the field, performing advanced relay testing and commissioning activities while mentoring junior technicians and ensuring projects are completed safely, efficiently, and in accordance with customer specifications and industry standards.
This role requires travel and the ability to work independently or lead small work crews on energized electrical substations and complex protection and control projects.
Relay Testing & Commissioning
- Perform acceptance testing, commissioning, maintenance testing, and troubleshooting of protective relays and control systems.
- Test and commission transmission, distribution, and generation protection schemes.
- Verify proper operation of relay settings, logic, communications, and control systems.
- Perform end-to-end testing, point-to-point verification, functional testing, and system commissioning.
- Conduct testing on breaker failure, bus differential, transformer differential, line protection, feeder protection, capacitor bank, and generator protection schemes.
- Analyze relay event reports, oscillography, fault records, and disturbance recordings.
- Perform testing and troubleshooting of:
- Transmission & Distribution Circuit breakers
- Current transformers (CTs), Potential transformers (PTs), CCVTs, SSVTs
- Power transformers, Auto transformers
- Battery systems
- Control circuits
- SCADA and RTU systems
- Line Panels, Breaker Panels
- Bus and Transformer Differential Panels
- Various SEL Relays for Transmission & Distribution
- Metering equipment
- Capacitor Banks & Protection
- Reactors and Protection
- Verify proper operation of protection and control wiring.
- Support energization and startup activities.
- Lead field crews on relay and commissioning projects.
- Coordinate testing activities with customers, project managers, construction personnel, and operations groups.
- Train and mentor Relay Technicians and Apprentices.
- Review test plans, drawings, settings files, and commissioning procedures.
- Provide technical guidance and problem resolution during project execution.
- Prepare accurate test reports and commissioning documentation.
- Review relay settings and protection documentation for completeness.
- Maintain calibration records and testing equipment logs.
- Ensure deliverables meet customer and company quality standards.
- Promote and maintain a strong safety culture.
- Follow all company, customer, OSHA, and NFPA 70E safety requirements.
- Participate in job hazard assessments, tailboard meetings, and site safety programs.
- High School Diploma or GED.
- Minimum 8+ years of relay testing and commissioning experience in utility substations.
- Demonstrated experience with transmission and distribution protection systems.
- Proficiency in reading:
- One-line diagrams
- AC/DC schematics
- Wiring diagrams
- Relay settings files
- Strong troubleshooting and problem-solving skills.
- Ability to travel as required; Mostly Mississippi, Texas, Louisiana, Arkansas.
- Valid driver's license with acceptable driving record.
- Ability to pass applicable background checks, drug screens, and customer qualification requirements.
- Associate degree in Electrical Technology or related field.
- Experience with major relay manufacturers including:
- GE
- Siemens
- ABB
- Beckwith
- Basler
- Schweitzer Engineering Laboratories (SEL)
- Experience with Doble and Omicron testing equipment.
- Experience with SCADA, RTU, and communications testing.
- Previous relaying crew lead, relay foreman, or technical supervisory experience.
